CreateChoiceProcessTask no longer exists

If when you open Task Scheduler you see a pop-up error message that states "The selected task CreateChoiceProcessTask no longer exists", is because for unknown reasons (Microsoft bug?) the task was partially deleted.  CreateChoiceProcessTask is a task that asks you which web browser you want to use as your default browser.  I have had this happen on two computers, one had Windows 7 and the other had Windows 10.  Interestingly, the Windows 7 system had the error until I upgraded it to Windows 10.  The Windows 10 system with the error started the problem after upgrading from Windows 7.  On both systems, I have three web browsers Chrome as the primary browser, as well as Firefox and Microsoft IE/Edge.

How do you fix CreateChoiceProcessTask error?

If you have already opened all of the different web browsers that you have installed and have set the proper one as the default browser, to fix the error in Task Scheduler, you just need to clean the Windows registry. Be careful not to delete any registry items that are not related, since doing so will cause other things to break.
  1. Open Windows Registry Editor
  2. Search for CreateChoiceProcessTask
    • It should bring up a folder {bunch of numbers/letters} under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tasks  , copy paste the  {bunch of numbers/letters} to notepad so you can search for it later and clean that up as well, and then delete the entire folder {bunch of numbers/letters} in that location.
    • It should also bring up HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\CreateChoiceProcessTask , delete the entire CreateChoiceProcessTask folder
  3. Search for {bunch of numbers/letters} that you got in step 2, and delete all instances of it in the registry.
You are done!  I also recommend running CCleaner to clean up any other issues that might be in your registry.

By the way, if you need a copy of Windows 10 for a new PC, you may be able to get one at a discount from Amazon, here is the Windows 10 listings on Amazon that seem to be reasonably priced.
